Today is about learning about America, the land of the free and obese. Based on the articles written by Steven Witherly, food scientist, medicaldaily.com, and Norton Center Infographic, every American school board is discussing if junk food should be banned from school. Many wonder whether or not to ban junk food at school. School cafeterias should ban junk food because it creates addictions, many can be affected by low-income communities, and it causes obesity. Junk food should be banned in school cafeterias because of addiction. “Bland ingredients are purposely made into junk food so that you crave more or you add enough salt or sugar until your mouth explodes with flavor,” says Michael Moss, author of Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us. Once sugar or salt touches one's tongue, favored is the burst of flavor from the plentiful amount of salt or sugar, so this is what keeps wanted to be tasted, but there is no more room to consume anymore. Not only that, but Steve Witherly, a food scientist, says that children who get addicted to junk food, will most likely be addicted to crack or other drugs as an adult. Furthermore, junk food should be prohibited in school lunches. The issue with school lunch is that it may be a not so healthy meal in which case could be the only meal a student gets a day. Access to a healthy meal is not so easy. Therefore, junk food should not be given as part of a school lunch because of the low-income communities. Based on Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign page, over 31 million children eat school lunches. If a school is dependable for offering a meal to a child who doesn’t eat outside of school, the meal should be provided with healthy foods. Fast food is not always healthy but is easily accessible. Unlike junk food, healthy food is expensive and hardly accessible. Due to this cause, families with low incomes have a smaller possibility of having the chance to eat healthier. However, with junk food out of the way, the school board will have more room for more nutritious meals to give to the students. Finally, obesity is a huge effect of junk food. Junk food starts in school cafeterias, where many students eat. Because of junk food in school cafeterias, most of these students then become overweight or end up obese, which lead to health issues and sometimes even death. According to the Norton Center Infographic, there are many health issues based on school cafeteria junk food. The infographic includes how “25,000 children in the United States are overweight or obese,” (Norton Center). “Since 1970, childhood obesity rates have increased by 500%.” Many children in the United States become obese, this is not new news. In 1970, obesity was made up of a small percent of people, but due to an increased amount of junk food, rates moved up as well. Additionally, The New York Times Upfront, the newsmagazine for teens, states, “America is facing a crisis because of our eating habits. Sixty million adults (roughly 70 percent) are obese.” America’s eating habits have dangerously increased with about 300,000 deaths included because of obesity. This problem starts at an early age. Nevertheless, junk food should be banned in school cafeterias. To sum up, junk food is one cause of people being in an unhealthy situation. Junk food can create not only physical problems like obesity, but it can cause mental problems like addiction, or be affection by low-income communities. Junk food can create differences between a healthy and unhealthy person by affecting their physical differences and creating new health issues.
The Crucible Essay
In early 1692, in the Puritan community of Salem, Massachusetts, three girls were caught dancing (which was not allowed) in the forbidden forest where the Natives would do rituals and were said they saw people with the devil. After confirming to ‘seeing the devil’ everyone who knew about the girls, asked who was with the devil and eventually the girls started to say many names. Eventually, this would lead to the events now known as “The Salem Witch Trials” because the three girls were pronouncing names of the so-called witches, but the names were actually the people that they did not like which eventually led to a mass hysteria.“The Crucible”, Arthur Miller, historical fiction. Arthur Miller, the playwright of “The Crucible” incorporates identity with the ethical implications of power, and how one’s name can build social, judicial, and moral powers.
In the play, “The Crucible”, Giles Corey is one of the many people in the Puritan community of Salem who has more judicial power than most in the village.Giles Corey is one of the oldest people among Salem village standing at a staggering eighty-three and has many powers over many others (page 9 right column). It is said on page 9, right column that Giles Corey has been in court over six times because he was suing people constantly because his friend, John Proctor’s, roof got burnt down so Giles was trying to use his judicial power to try and pay for the roof. This shows that he has implications of judicial power when he has the power to have no evidence in a case and still be able to follow through with it. Not only that, but Giles had a bigger say in the trials especially when delaying the execution of his wife, Martha Corey.
One important dynamic character is Rebecca Nurse and she has a lot of social power because of her wealth and land. She had social power to help people decide things in the village especially when Thomas Putnam’s brother, Bailey Putnam. This means that she was able to socially persuade people to vote Bailey Putnam out from leading the Village. Eventually, when John Proctor was going to confess to live, she persuaded him not to because that would destroy his identity, and associate the Proctor name with Witchcraft. Also Rebecca Nurse’s husband, Francis Nurse, also shows the social power when he tries to get people to sign a petition to stop Danforth from killing people any longer.
In the play, John Proctor has a lot of moral power. He mostly shows this during the trials when he helped a lot of people realize that what Danforth and the girls doing was wrong and not humane.During the later time of the trials, Elizabeth Proctor was being accused of being a witch by Abigail and this was her plan the whole time because she had an affair with John seven months prior and wanted him for herself because Elizabeth fired her because she found out about the affair. Also, he tries to convince the guards and Danforth to let the victims of the hysteria go and not execute them. Eventually in the end John was not successful and died as well but he tried to help those that needed it during the time.
Finally, Arthur Miller compares the ethical implications of power with judicial, social, and moral power by associating the identity of a person and how they are seen by others and instead of just getting power, the identity of them and how it is seen gives them power. This matters because it can now affect us in our lives whether it’s in a school election, obviously the most popular kid is going to be elected or even if a person with a lot of publicity can even be elected for President, Prime Minister, etc. Everyone should care about this because identity can affect the ethical implications of power that you have and will have. In conclusion, ethical implications, power, and identity can always lead to something good or bad especially when the girls started to accuse people.
In the society of today, many people are very dependent on technology and search engines to help us with everyday tasks. One of the most popular and used search engines is Google, and now people start to wonder if this great tool is making us less intelligent every time we use it. Many do believe that Google is making us less intelligent because of certain details such as how when you use Google to search for an answer or information you do not memorize the information but instead the place where you found it, the internet is filled with incorrect information, and Google can cause what is called ‘digital amnesia’. All of these reasons and details behind them make people wonder if Google is hurting us in the way of making us lack intelligence instead of helping us gain it. Google does negatively influence our intelligence by making us forget the answers, giving us incorrect information, and by giving us digital amnesia. Memory is the thing that helps us learn because it lets us remember important things. Google, however stops us from using our memory when we look something up on the web. Instead it tells us to only remember where we got the information and this makes us lack intelligence in some areas. The cause of this is that when you look something up normally such as in a book, you are more likely to remember it because it challenges you to find that information. Google is the opposite, when you look something up, all you do is just type in your question and in less than a second after, you have millions of results. This is absolutely no challenge and it makes your brain forget and that leads to a lack in intelligence (based on an Infographic by online colleges.net). The internet is a place where everyone can add information to give the rest of the world but sometimes the information that people provide is not the most accurate and this can lead to someone knowing that incorrect information instead of the correct information. What the end result of all this wrong information is you learning less and less which will lower your intelligence. There is no accurate statistic for how much of the internet is wrong because the internet is updating itself on a constant basis but it can be predicted that at least one fourth of the information that you will find on the internet and Google alone is going to be wrong. And yes some may argue that you could just use the correct information on the web, but the internet does not require you to reveal your self to the public so it is harder to know whether someone is right on the internet so if this person who is feeding people the wrong information then the public loses their intelligence little by little. Digital insomnia is a term for when you go on Google and you start to forget what you were doing or what you needing to know or even basic things that you should know. According to “The Independent Tech” by Genevieve Roberts, ninety percent of people suffer from Digital Insomnia, seventy percent of people do not know their child’s phone number by heart, forty-nine percent of people do not know their relationship partner’s phone number by heart and the list keeps going. The reason why digital insomnia affects our intelligence is because the more we use google the more important things we forget. It is similar to when your computer runs out of space so it makes room for new information and gets rid of other old information. Google is literally giving people that use the internet digital insomnia by getting us to look things that might not be so useful up so that they start to forget useful information and then that is when your intelligence weakens. Google is the tool that many people use to answer questions, but many do not know that it is actually making you lack intelligence. Google makes you less intelligent because it does not challenge your brain and then you will not memorize it, some information on the internet is incorrect, and it gives you digital insomnia. When you Google something it is so easy to know how to get the answer but since there is no actual challenge for you to get that information you are more likely to forget it than if you were reading a book and actually memorizing the information inside. Everyone that has access to a computer or just the internet in general, has the power to create any information about anything which gives an opportunity to internet trolls or people who just want to deceive others to write out false information and people do not know whether it is correct or not and by just reading that information that you think is correct, makes you less intelligent because you do not know the correct information. Digital insomnia, which you get from going on Google and searching for something but you start looking up other things that was not what you were intentionally looking for which makes your brain full of information but you also need enough memory to be able to understand what Google is showing you so you start to forget basic things that you should know but you can not remember because of the insomnia. Finally, the complete intelligence could completely be lost if we do not challenge ourselves instead of using Google because it does make us lack in human intelligence.
