The main characters in the book that I am reading, "A Dog's Purpose", are Mother, Fast, Sister, Hungry, The Narrator (No introduced name yet), Carlos, Bobby, The elderly woman (No introduced name yet). The protagonist of the book is the Narrator and she is telling the story of her mother and her siblings through out their lives and the journey they take from being feral dogs in a swamp area to being rescued and going to a dog sanctuary. Mother is the birth-mother of the 4 siblings Fast, Sister, Hungry, and the Narrator. Sister is one of the three only female dogs in the family of five and her name is only sister because the narrator can not find anything that really stands out about her.. Fast is one of the only two males in the family of five and likes to be the boss of things but also is the fastest in the family besides mother. Hungry is the second male in the family of five and is also the runt of the litter and gets his name because the narrator thinks that he is always hungry for food. The narrator does not call herself anything because she also sees nothing absolutely special about her. After the first chapter a group of three people named Carlos, Bobby, and the Elderly woman go to help the family but they were only able to catch three out of the five dogs because Sister got to scared and ran away and unfortunately Hungry passed away because the narrator says that Hungry had a sickness since he was born but no one really thought of it as life threatening but unfortunately was. After mother, Fast, and the narrator make it to the dog sanctuary where they find hundreds of other dogs and Fast and the Narrator immediately find other dogs to hang out with and play with during their fist day there. The dynamics of Fast changed because he used to be very bossy with everyone but now realizes his place when he sees the other dogs and their authority.
Reading Log #2 Topic Choice #2: Conflict
One of the main conflicts in the story is when a group of people come to confiscate all of the dogs in the sanctuary from Senora (previously known as the nice older woman) which puts Toby (previously known as the narrator) and his siblings (Fast and Sister) in a spot where they are scared because they do not know where they are going. It is also important to mention that mother ran away because she refused to be social with all the other dogs and still was considered a feral dog because she never grew accustom to the people and other dogs around her so she decided to run away from the sanctuary and Toby, Fast, nor Sister ever caught up to her so they haven't seen her since that important event. So now the three dogs are with all the dogs from the sanctuary plus the new leader who took down Top Dog and is the new leader of the dogs, Spike. This is a conflict instead of and important event because it is a problem that can affect a lot of future events in the story. The main characters are very scared of this conflict because they do not know what will happen with themselves and all their other friends from the sanctuary because they all got abducted so fast. This conflict is both internal and external because they are very frightened and sad to what might happen and to leave the sanctuary and Senora, Bobby, and Carlos but they also fear the men who took them. One piece of textual evidence is when sister gets scared of the men and it reads, "Sister broke into a run around the perimeter of the yard, as if expecting a hole to open." Using textual evidence, you can tell that Sister was very scared because she tried to escape as fast as she could but to no prevail. Another piece of textual evidence to prove that they were scared and sad was because they could sense Senora crying because they were taking her dogs and the quote to prove this is, "...I was upset to see Senora crying, struggling against Carlos and Bobby. Her sadness came off her and washed into me, and I pulled against the noose, wanting to go comfort her." This means that they were saddened to see the person that took care of them have to be forced to give them up.
Reading log #3
Since the chapter were the city comes to take the dogs from senora, Toby, the narrator, has been euthanized but since then he has been able to pass onto a next life and now he is a puppy again and is in what looks like a puppy mill and he decided that he would try to escape from it. Also he has new siblings and a new mother. He says what happens in a mill and what it was like in the short while he was there. Eventually after he ran away from the mill a man who seems to be a farmer, spots him in the road and stops to pick him up and take him to his son. The man who found him then names him "Bailey". After, Bailey then meets his son but we do not yet know his name. One thing to mention is that as soon as Bailey and the farmer's son meet each other, it seemed like they had an instant connection to each other. That is where I stopped reading.
